Description

HISTORY OF THIS BUILDING KNOWN AS THE BURNS MANSION The original part of the building was built in 1896 by Nelson B Williams, Owner and President of the Beatrice Gold Mine in Cripple Creek or Victor. Not much is known about him. Sometime he sold it to Frank Peck, a partner with Stratton, Burns and Doyle. Their mine was known as the Portland as 3 of the men came from Portland, Maine. After Stratton died, James F. Burns was President of the Mine and the Miners Union. When he spent millions to get the bodies of 10 miners killed in an elevator shaft collapse, Peck and Doyle ousted Burns from his position, and they took over. When the rubble was cleaned up, they found a vein of gold larger than any they’d found up until then. Burns got this house from Peck at that time. Peck was his brother in law. Burns doubled the size of the house. He died in 1919. He had built the Burns Opera House which was torn down in the 70’s to make the parking lot across from the Antlers Hotel. Mrs. Burns had this building renovated into apartments (told to Nancy by her granddaughter) and lived in it for several years before she died. A house was build on San Miguel and sold, to pay for the cost of the renovations. Mrs. Burns was then Mrs. Ady and lived in Apt 1. Sven Boesen who designed the conversion of the apartments, keeping each one unique in shape, preserving what elements of the original house that he could. Nancy has pictures of the house at various stages and was y given a copy of the floor
