Description
Son of a violin-maker, Henri Vieuxtemps helped shape the course of violin history in the 19th century, both as a developer of technique and as a composer of beloved concertos.
Event Details
To this day, his Concerto No. 5 remains a favorite of Itzhak Perlman and other virtuosos. In this program, Concertmaster Michael Hanson’s rendition serves as a foil to an America the Beautiful World Premiere by New Orleans composer Courtney Bryan, and Schubert’s final symphony, nicknamed “The Great.” Composed just a year after Beethoven’s Ninth, this monumental work is a dying young composer’s bid to be remembered alongside the titan of his generation — and it succeeds.
